. A performance of "The Slave", followed by The Garland Dance and a Grand Romantick "Operatick Drama". The page is 9" x 12 ½" and on very thin stock rag paper. This is attached to an 11" x 15 ½" piece of mat board. If you look at the second image you can see the two spots where the broadside id attached to the board. The edges are very rough. A rare piece of theatre history.
Theatre Royal at Covent Garden, designed by Edward Shepherd. On the opening night, 7 December 1732, Rich's actors carried him there in triumph for a performance of Congreve's The Way of the World. For the first hundred years or so of its history the theatre was primarily a playhouse; Letters Patent granted by Charles II had given Covent Garden and Drury Lane almost sole rights to present spoken drama in the capital. It later opened for opera and musical. It has suffered through numerous fires and has been rebuilt each time and still serves as the Royal Opera House.
