When it comes to making quality bedding,
it's all about the fiber
(staple)
...
Combed cotton
is a softer version of regular cotton, made by treating the cotton fibers before they are spun into yarn. Because combed cotton requires more work and results in a higher quality, tougher fabric, it is usually more expensive than regular cotton.
Two Plies
are spun together with the twist worked in the opposite direction from how the singles were spun. This gives the yarn more strength durability and consistency than what is seen in a single yarn.
Sateen
i
s the method in which a fabric is woven creating a silky smooth surface with a luminous sheen and known for its luster and drape. A "sateen weave" means that there is one vertical thread woven for every
four or more horizontal threads. Since more of the threads are exposed to the surface, the resulting fabric is much smoother than if it was woven with a standard type weave. It's lustrous and smooth to the touch.
Cotton can typically be categorized into three classifications
: T
he longer the fiber, the softer and more durable the final product will be.
*
Short staple
cotton typically features fibers up to 1.125" long. This is the most common variety used for denim, flannel and low maintenance fibers.
*
Long staple
cotton has individual fibers measuring 1.125 to 1.25". Longer staple length translates to a smoother surface with fewer exposed ends. Long staple fiber tends to be softer, silkier and more durable.
*
Extra-long staple
refers to fibers at a length of 1.375 to 2" long. It comes from rarer, more difficult to harvest cotton crops. Extra-long staple cotton is considered the highest quality and most desired cotton for its soft, silky feel. Pima and Egyptian are both considered extra long staple cotton.
